The UC Davis Men’s Rugby 7’s Team travelled to Treasure Island this past weekend to face off in a 2-day tournament against fellow D1A competitors. After suffering 2 losses on a disappointing first day, the Aggies reevaluated their depth, made adjustments, and bounced back on the second day. They went on to defeat UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara University, and Cal Poly SLO to take the Bowl.
True freshman Kevin “The Midget” Brookshire was UC Davis’ top try scorer for the weekend with a hat trick against Santa Clara, and a brace against University of San Diego, only to top his performance off another try against Cal Poly in the Bowl Final. He was also the honorable mention for the Aggies’ man of the tournament.
Man of the Tournament for the Aggies went to fifth year Ari Wargon. Ari was frequently seen leading the Aggies’ defensive press, closing down the opponent’s space, attacking the gain line with support, and busting his chops to secure breakdowns. He challenged himself both physically as well as tactically this weekend, and his knowledge of the game showed on the pitch.
Captain Harrison Morrow, while proud of the team for pulling through to the Bowl Final, had this to say about the Team’s performance, “This weekend was a big turning point for us in terms of finishing off a tournament. In past years and at SLO this year we tended to lose steam as the competition went on. At Treasure Island, we got better with every game we played, and came back on day 2 to go undefeated. I am really proud of the way we played, and am looking forward to having one last run with the 7’s squad.”
The UC Davis Men’s Rugby Club will be playing in the Silicon Valley Sevens tournament at Avaya Stadium on Nov. 4th and 5th. For several leaders on the team, including Harry and Ari, this will be their final Sevens tournament as an Aggie. Our boys will be playing on arguably the largest stage in a decade, and aim to end the season playing at a level the UCD Men’s Rugby Sevens Team has never played at before.
