On a beautiful day in Northern California, the UC Davis Rugby Aggies entertained the San Diego State Aztecs at Russell Field.
Both teams had some tougher weekends earlier in the season and were ready for a league match that gave both teams a chance to compete. The Aggies has been improving week over week and were ready to show that they were making strides.
The Ags did not disappoint. Coach Malpass stated, “The boys applied pressure from the very start of the match, and to our credit, San Diego never threatened the try line.” Throughout the first and second halves, the Ags were working to dictate the flow of the game through a solid platform and speed of ball in the phases. They did this and more in a game that ended up 21-3 in favor of the home side.
Coach Malpass continued, “I believe we have 30-40% more in this group and we are looking forward to showing what we are made of in the coming weeks.”
Stand out performers were scrumhalf Kevin Brookshire and Fullback Tommy O’Brien, who moved from the 15 to the 12 role to give the Ags an edge of toughness on defense and rucking.
Next up for the Aggies is Cal Poly down in San Luis Obispo on 2/22/2020.
