The Rugby Aggies headed 4+ hours southwest on 2/22 to take on a resurgent Cal Poly side that was showing excellent form all year after a 2019 season riddled with injuries. Add in a long drive and a still young Aggies team, and we could have predicted that the Mustangs would hold up their favorite role.
Although Cal Poly delivered on their athleticism and fine coaching, the Aggies surprised early and were keeping up for most of the first half, but as young teams will do against experienced ones, they gave up 2 tries late that were as much mental errors as playing a superior opponent.
Regardless, excuses are like you know whats, and the Mustangs proved the superior team over the 80 minute test. Even though the Ags battled fairly evenly in the second 40, the Mustangs kept up their end with a 37-17 victory.
Coach Malpass offered, “Upon further film review, we were our own worst enemies with too many mental errors at pivotal points of the game. Cal Poly had the experience to take advantage of our errors and we could never quite recover. We are looking forward to next week vs UCSB and Senior Day.”
Next up is the University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos at Russel Field on 2/29/2020.
